Disease Details

Caused by abnormal growth of intestinal surface cells. Until it starts out as a polyp in the intestine (polyp). Over time, the polyp will continue to grow. until it eventually becomes cancer within 5-10 years

Symptom

• More constipation
• Constipation alternating with diarrhea
• Passing stool becomes smaller.
• Bloody mucus in the stool
• Chronic abdominal pain
• Having weight loss for no apparent reason

Treatment

• Surgery
• Radiation Treatment
• Chemotherapy Treatment

What is this disease?

Cancer is the 3rd most common cancer among Thai people. The disease process usually occurs from Abnormal growth of intestinal surface cells that begins as an intestinal polyp. Over time, this polyp will continue to grow. Until it eventually becomes cancer within 5 - 10 years.

Sypmtoms

Mainly related to excretion, including:
• More constipation
• Constipation alternating with diarrhea
• Passing stool becomes smaller.
• Bloody mucus in the stool
• Chronic abdominal pain
• Having weight loss for no apparent reason

Risk factors

At present we are still unable to find the exact cause, but there are main risk factors for the disease, including:
• Patient with a genetic history, such as having a direct relative with colon cancer.
• Some genetic diseases
• Chronic inflammatory bowel disease, having had pelvic radiation therapy.
• Lifestyle behaviors such as drinking alcohol, smoking, eating fried, grilled, high-fat foods, etc.

Diagnosis

• Colonoscopy. (colonoscopy) to see the location of the lesion and cut pieces of meat (biopsy) for pathological examination
• Blood test for CEA levels.
• Computed tomography (CT scan) to see the spread of the disease to various organs in the body.
• Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in some cases, such as rectal cancer.

Treatment

The main treatment for the stage where it has not spread is:
• Surgery to remove the cancer. by surgical technique Depends on the location of the lump.
• As for chemotherapy or radiation,
it is useful in some cases where there are indications.

Currently, there are two methods of surgery:
• Surgery that opens the abdomen (open surgery)
• Endoscopic surgery (laparoscopic surgery) which is a surgical technology that makes approximately 4 small incisions, size 5-10 mm, and an open wound to remove the lump, size approximately 4-5 cm, which has the advantage that the patient will have less pain from the wound. and recover more quickly
